Every client approaches their project a little different. Sometimes the design is set, sometimes it needs to be discovered. The process can be quick or the path of discovery can lead in unexpected directions. My goal is to find and produce the design that will give the client a lifetime of enjoyment. From my days in Architecture School I always start with my pencil. It is in the connection between mind, eye, hand and paper that the look of a project is formed. Often projects are completed with only pencil drawings. With more complex projects I move from pencil to CAD. The digital design makes cutting techniques such as water jet, laser and plasma possible and makes communication with other trades much easier.
The pencil is where it starts. This gate was the final piece of railing design around a patio.
The revision process never stops. Many changes and adjustments take place as each piece is hand formed.
Mountain Gate in formed steel flat bar with a powder coated finish. A composite of the local mountains of San Luis Obispo County. The gate was designed to match the railing completed several years earlier.
Mountain Railing is an idealized rendering of Big Sur as seen from the ocean.
This railing was designed in two parts. The lower railing designed for privacy is powder coated tube steel frames with wood infill. The upper rail is a hand formed steel flat bar designed to represent the hills of Central California with a bit of Big Sur in the mix.
